Virginia’s Patterin Quilt

Sep 17, 2019 | My Quilts, The Ultimate Beginners Quilt

September 14, 2019: My 5 year old granddaughter loves touching my fabric. She ooo’s and ah’s and says lots of things like “Grannie Ma, This one is SO pretty!” as she tells me what each one she likes would be perfect for – a skirt, a dress, a top… She remembers the fabrics I’ve used on things for her, her sisters, and her cousin.

I had such fun playing with her. On the day we started her quilt, I had her all to myself, without her sisters and without Granddaddy. I asked her if she would like to make a quilt and of course she said “Yes!”! My original plan was to do the Ultimate Beginner’s Quilt but after the first two blocks, I decided that we would just repeat just those two blocks.

She knows what she likes and I let her choose from just about any fabric she wanted. My cutting table was an explosion of it all – from yardage to fat quarters to charm squares to scraps. She learned about solids and about fabrics that “read as a solid”. We talked about not putting the same colors or the same patterns of different color ways next to each other. She grasped those concepts easily. She had so much fun counting the fabrics needed and then arranging the order!

Pattern: The Ultimate Beginner’s Quilt by The Fat Quarter Shop
We started with this pattern but decided to only use the first two blocks, alternating them for a big 9 block layout.

January 26, 2020: Virginia’s Patterin: Virginia is now 6 yrs old and she loves patterns – she pronounces it “patterin” We only get to work on it about once a month. This weekend we finished piecing her top after she decided on exactly how she wanted the blocks and cornerstones arranged. The next time she is here or maybe over video chat, we will pick her backing.

February 7, 2020: I gave her the option of using one fabric for the backing, or four – with the idea of making a giant Disappearing Four Patch. She chose to use four fabrics and chose them from the many that I took to their house. The backing was completed on this trip.
